Who is responsible for your sewer line?

The private sewer lateral is the pipe that carries wastewater from your home to the public sewer main. In Indiana, homeowners is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and replacing the private sewer lateral—even portions that extend into the public right-of-way.

Homeowner Responsibilities

  • Maintain the private sewer lateral.
  • Repair leaks or damaged pipe.
  • Keep grease and debris out of the sewer.
  • Address root intrusion when necessary.

Conservancy District Responsibilities

  • Maintain the public sewer main.
  • Respond to issues within the public sewer system.
  • Operate and maintain district-owned infrastructure.

Sewer Lateral Replacement & Rehabilitation Program (SLRRP)

The Merrillville Conservancy District is helping homeowners reduce sanitary sewer problems by offering reimbursement assistance for qualifying sewer lateral repairs and replacements.


Eligible homeowners may receive:

  • Up to 50% reimbursement
  • Maximum contribution of $5,000
  • Optional 0% interest financing

Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis while funding is available.
